“I Have pulled as much of my catalogue from Spotify as I can”
David Byrne has voiced in on the Spotify debate via an op-ed piece published here in the Guardian.
As an artist who’s been established for decades, both with Talking Heads and his solo work, Byrne does not have to rely on income steaming services like Spotify, but is voicing his concern for emerging artists. He worries that with the current system, seemingly established artists, even those as successful as his touring partner St. Vincent “will eventually have to find employment elsewhere or change what they do to make more money.”
It seems to me that the whole model is unsustainable as a means of supporting creative work of any kind. Not just music. The inevitable result would seem to be that the internet will suck the creative content out of the whole world until nothing is left.
